The child’s sex is generally determined between weeks 16 and 20 of pregnancy. However, in some cases the sex can be determined as early as the 14th week. The baby’s gender is based on genetic factors and depends on the father’s sex chromosomes.
The factor that produces a male child is that the father carries a Y chromosome. While women have two X chromosomes, men have one X and one Y chromosome. So when a male child is born, the father’s sperm cell carries a Y chromosome. When this sperm combines with the mother’s X chromosome, a male child is born.
On the other hand, if a female child is born, the father’s sperm cell carries an X chromosome. In this case, combining with the mother’s X chromosome produces a female child.
